Bemidji Deer Project

About the Project

Beginning January 2024, researchers from Bemidji State University will be tagging and collaring deer within Bemidji city limits. The project will study how deer behaviors change in response to the special city archery hunt, and will identify methods to improve the efficacy of archery hunting as a management tool for suburban deer populations. The project is funded through a grant from the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizens Commission on Natural Resources.

More information can be found on the  BSU Deer Project YouTube channel.

Deer Hunters

Deer with tags or collars are available for harvest. An objective of the study is to estimate rates of hunting mortality within the city, so we encourage hunters to neither selectively target nor avoid the harvest of marked deer. Please make harvest decisions as if the collar or tags were not present.

Did you harvest a tagged or collared deer? Please contact Dr. Haus via email or phone. If leaving a voicemail please give your name, the tag number, and a phone number where you can be reached.

Cooperating Landowners

If you are a landowner within city limits and are willing to allow BSU researchers access to your property to capture deer, please contact Dr. Haus. Capture activities will occur between January and March. This research would not be possible without the generosity and cooperation of our Bemidji neighbors!
