Required Text: Mathematical Excursions (4th edition) by Aufmann, Lockwood, Nation, & Clegg
Webassign Class Code: bemidjistate 0158 0580
Prerequisite: Two years of high school algebra and an
appropriate score on the Mathematics Placement Test or Math 0800 with a
grade of C or higher. Liberal
Education Area II.
Description: Algebra and Mathematical Reasoning is designed to help students develop their algebra skills and also connect these skills to practical applications of mathematics they are likely to encounter in their personal and professional lives. The topics that will be covered are:
Throughout the course we will emphasize the
interrelationships among algebraic, graphic, and numerical representations. A
graphing calculator is required and will be used regularly as a problem solving
tool.
Goals and objectives of the course:
Students will:
Class participation and quizzes:
Quizzes will be given frequently and generally unannounced.
Make-ups will not be allowed for missed quizzes; however, your two lowest
quiz scores will be dropped from calculating your grade.
Cell phones must be turned off during class.
Homework:
Assignments will prepare you for the quizzes and exams.
You are responsible for understanding how to do each problem; I recommend
study groups of three to four. There
will be some problem days where the assignment will be completed during class.
Exams: There will be five 100
point exams during the course and a 200 point comprehensive final.
Make-up exams will be given only under special circumstances and need to
be discussed with me before hand. The
final exam will be Friday, May3rd from 3:30 – 5:30
pm.
Grades: Grades for this course will be based upon homework, quizzes, tests, and a comprehensive final exam; some of the quizzes may be unannounced. Items for both will come from the assigned homework. The following grading scale will be used to determine grades:
A | 90 – 100 % |
B | 80 – 89 % |
C | 70 – 79 % |
D | 60 – 69 % |
F | Below 60% |
Make-ups are not allowed for missed quizzes; instead I will allow you to drop your two lowest scores from the terms. All tests will count toward your final grade. The instructor reserves the right to adjust the grading scale if necessary.
Working through the assigned problems is essential to learning algebra. Showing your work is the only way to receive partial credit and hence is very important.
Academic integrity: Students are expected to practice the highest standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in all of their academic work. Any form of academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, cheating, misrepresentation) may result in disciplinary action. Possible disciplinary actions may include failure for part or all of a course, as well as suspension from the University.
