Awards and Grants

  • One of three authors on a successful Technology Innovation Grant (Fall 2001) at the University of Alaska Anchorage.  This grant was presented by the Information Technology Services Center and enabled the Mathematical Sciences Department to purchase statistical software for students.

  • Awarded a Professional Improvement Grant (October 2002) for the amount of $724.23 to attend the 46th Annual Fall Technical Conference and present a paper entitled “Better Industrial and Scientific Experiments: The Overview and New Directions.”

  • Awarded a Professional Improvement Grant (August 2004) for the amount of $1200.00 to attend the Joint Statistical Meetings in Toronto, Canada to present a paper entitled “Blocking Strategies for Factorial Experiments with Hard-to-Change Factors.”

  • Dr. Glen Richgels, Dr. Derek Webb, and Dr. Randy Westhoff of Bemidji State University were awarded a grant entitled “Improving Teacher Quality in Geometry and Probability and Statistics Grades 7-12” from the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office in 2004 and in 2005.  The grant was for the amount of $47,337.38 in 2004 and for $47,337.38 in 2005.  The grant enabled the creation and teaching of two summer courses each year for in-the-field junior high and high school teachers, one in geometry and one in probability and statistics.

  • Awarded a Professional Improvement Grant (April 2006) for the amount of $500.00 to attend the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics Spring Conference in Duluth, MN to give a talk titled “Coin Games Useful for Illustrating Probabilty.”

  • Awarded a Professional Improvement Grant (December 2006) for the amount of $2000.00 to support the IPESL  grant titled “Student Preparedness in the Mathematical Sciences: Bridging the Disciplines.”  This grant was jointly awarded to the following instructors at Bemidji State University: Todd Frauenholtz , Ann Hougen, Ryan Hutchinson, Glen Richgels, Derek Webb, and Marty Wolf.

  • Awarded a Professional Improvement Grant (December 2006) for the amount of $600.00 to attend and present two talks at the 2007 Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference, Duluth, MN, April 26-28, 2007

  • November 2006 Todd Frauenholtz , Ann Hougen, Ryan Hutchinson, Glen Richgels, Derek Webb, and Marty Wolf were awarded an Initiative to Promote Excellence in Student Learning (IPESL) grant from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities office (MnSCU) in the amount of $63,374.  In conjunction with the grant, an experimental course will be developing and co-taught Spring 2007 at Bemidji State University.  The intent of this grant is to create a mathematics class for students that have been away from mathematics for a long time or did not take any mathematics their senior year of high school.  This class will blend materials from algebra, statistics, and computer science into one class.  The goal of the class and grant is, upon successful completion of the class, for students to be better prepared to succeed in subsequent classes in their major program of study regardless of what that program is.

  • Anderson, J. (2005-2007). Pesticide Impacts on Neurological Diseases-Reducing Risk. Funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, $500,000. PI for the Epidemiological Study: Julie Anderson, RN, PhD, CCRC. Webb, D.: Research Team Member, Statistician.

  • Awarded a Professional Improvement Grant (May 2007) for the amount of $1,200 to attend and present a talk at the 2007 Mathematical Association of America – Mathfest Summer conference, San Jose, CA, August 3-5, 2007

  • May 2008 Derek Webb was part of a grant team that was awarded a More and Better Math and Science Teaching and Learning grant for the amount of $35,900.  The grant was awarded in order to achieve the STEM goals established by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees.

  • The Blandin Foundation awarded $225,000 in support of the Northern Minnesota College Readiness Partnership to the MnSCU Foundation in September, 2008. This is a regional initiative designed to improve student success and build capacity among local school districts and community colleges to sustain positive long-term results. Resources will be provided to implement an activities-based mathematics course and to conduct research to determine best practices to better serve students of color, low-income status or who require nontraditional approaches to mathematics education.  Principle investigator is Derek Webb

  • Awarded a Professional Improvement Grant (February 2009) for the amount of $700.00 to attend and present a talk at the 2009 Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference , Duluth, MN, April 30-May 2, 2009.

  • April 2009 Glen Richgels and Derek Webb revceived a $2,400 grant from the MnSCU Foundation to support travel expenses of 6 college instructors to attend the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Minnesota Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges Conference in Duluth, MN on April 30-May1, 2009.

  • May 2009 Glen Richgels and Derek Webb received a $100,000 grant from the MnSCU Office of the Chancellor to support the Northern Minnesota College Readiness Partnership.  Principle investigator is Derek Webb

  • Awarded a Faculty Mini-Grant (April 2012) in conjunction with Dr. Marty Wolf and Dr. Jeff Ueland in the amount of $3000.00 to support a research project titled: Spatial and longitudinal analysis of Odocoileus virginianus frequencies, habits, and physical characteristics over multiple years and locations.
