Instructor: Todd Frauenholtz
Office: Sattgast 207G
Phone: 755-2817
Class meets: M, T, W, R, F in Decker Hall 113 from 10:00 - 10:50 am
Office hours: M, W, F from 11:00 - 11:50 am and by other arrangement
Required Text: Calculus, eleventh ed. by Larson with Webassign.
Webassign Class Code: bemidjistate 8281 8947
Prerequisite:
Three years of high school mathematics and an appropriate score on the
Mathematics Placement Test or completion of MATH 1470 with a grade
of C or better.
Description: Limits, differentiation and integration of algebraic and trigonometric functions; applications of the derivative and curve sketching; applications of integration. A graphing calculator is required. Liberal Education Category 4
When possible, problems will be approached from graphical, numerical, and algebraic representations. The different representations and how they are related to each other will be discussed throughout the course. A graphing calculator is required and will be used to interpret the geometric representations of functions and in problem solving.
Student Learner Outcomes:
1. Students will develop an understanding of the basic concepts, methods and content of calculus.
2. Students will be able to use calculus in problem solving and mathematical modeling.
3. Students will be able to apply problem solving strategies to look at problems from multiple points of view and judge the appropriateness of various models and techniques in each problem situation.
4. Students will be able to construct logical mathematical arguments in order to communicate problems and solutions effectively both orally and in writing.
5. Students will gain an understanding and appreciation of the structure and beauty of mathematics, the economy and power of its notation and its applications in the world around us.
Class participation and quizzes: Quizzes will be given approximately every week and generally unannounced. Make-ups will not be allowed for missed quizzes; however, your lowest quiz score will be dropped from calculating your final grade. All cell phones must be turned off during class.
Homework: Will prepare you for the quizzes and exams. You are responsible for understanding how to do each problem; I recommend study groups of three to four.
Exams: There will be three 100 point exams during the course and a 150 point comprehensive final. Make-up exams will be given only under special circumstances and need to be discussed with me before hand. The final exam will be Friday, December 13th from 3:30 - 5:30 pm.
Grades: Grades for this course will be based upon homework, quizzes, tests, and a comprehensive final exam; some of the quizzes may be unannounced. Items for both will come from the assigned homework. The following grading scale will be used to determine grades:
A | 90 – 100 % |
B | 80 – 89 % |
C | 70 – 79 % |
D | 60 – 69 % |
F | Below 60% |
Make-ups are not allowed for missed quizzes, instead I will allow you to drop your lowest score. All tests will count toward your final grade. The instructor reserves the right to adjust the grading scale if necessary.
Working through the assigned problems is essential to learning mathematics. Showing your work is the only way to receive partial credit; hence it is very important on quizzes and exams.
Academic integrity: Students are expected to practice the highest standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in all of their academic work. Any form of academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, cheating, misrepresentation) may result in disciplinary action. Possible disciplinary actions may include failure for part or all of a course, as well as suspension from the University.
