1.    Using a globe or world map, for the given latitude and longitude, describe the location in terms of countries, states, towns or physical features (i.e just W of Salinas Kansas, USA)

2.    Use interpolation to find the latitude of the point in the diagram below to the nearest 100th of a degree

3.    Using a globe or world map, find latitude and longitude  of the given locations to the nearest degree

a.    Chicago IL

b.    Cape Town South Africa

 

4.    The north start is four “fists” above the horizon.  What is your latitude?

 

 

Bonus:  On October 20th you measure the sun at it’s highest angle above the southern horizon at 50.0 degrees. This happens at 6:30:00 UTC. 

 

a.    Find your latitude and longitude in deg and min.  (Hints: You’ll need the analemma on p. 26 to be completely accurate.  Your latitude on the solstice  ia 90 deg minus the angle of the sun above the horizon at noon.)

 

b.    Where are you?  (describe your location in terms of political boundaries and towns).
