Description of assignments/sections of binder:

1)    You should list and briefly describe the personal training certifications available from ACSM, NSCA, and ACE.  In addition, describe the qualifications necessary to be able to sit for each examination.   I suggest that you prepare a table.  It is not acceptable to submit material that you printed from the Internet.

2)    Each student will be assigned one piece of exercise equipment available in the recreation center that has an LED panel with information about the quantity of exercise.  Students will provide a one page handout that explains what the information means.  This should include an illustration of the panel.  The handout should be of the quality that would be provided to a client.

3)   Students will lead a 10-15 minute "Stretch and Strength" program at the Senior Citizen Center for at least 5 sessions during a six week period.  Students will keep a log of the dates they lead the program.  In addition, for each daily entry students should reflect on how effective they felt their leadership was, how they used principles learned and how they might improve it on the next visit.

4)   Each student will present material to the class on exercise prescription for a special population. These presentations should highlight significant alterations in assessment and exercise prescription needed for this special group compared to an apparently healthy population. At the time of the presentation, other students in the class will be expected to ask pertinent questions of the presenter.

5)   Each student will read two articles from sources of their choice.  The first article should be one that they think is reputable.  The contents should be summarized in 2 paragraphs.  In addition, the student should indicate why they think that this information is good.    The second article should have material that the reader might find questionable.  The contents of this questionable article should be summarized in 2 paragraphs and then the student should indicate why they question this information.

6)   Students will practice leading a group in aerobic dance exercise.  Students will prepare and lead the group in a brief aerobic dance routine.

7)    Each student will work with a client leading them in exercises or helping them plan and carry out an exercise program.   Students will be expected to spend 2-3 hours per week for one month during the second half of the semester with these “clients”.    Students will keep records of screening materials used, fitness assessment results, prescriptions offered, goals set, motivational tools employed, etc.  In addition, the student should keep a weekly log of their activities.

8)   Lab reports are due at the end of lab or at the date announced by the professor.  Any labs missed because of University sponsored events or illness may be made up, any other missed labs may not be made up for points.

9)    Students will be provided several handouts.  These should be organized and included in the binder.  Tabs that identify each area should be used so that the material can be readily accessible during exams and working with clients.   Students are expected to include other materials related physical activity, exercise, assessment, and exercise prescription.   These can be from journals, newspapers, professional organizations, etc.

10)    Selected chapters from the textbook will be identified.  Study questions about the content will be in Desire2Learn, a web-based course management software.  Student must complete the quiz by the deadlines.  Multiple attempts will be allowed.
