My teaching philosophy...Students learn most effectively when they pursue their own interests. My role as a teacher is to stimulate interests, motivate independent effort, and encourage collaboration. In my lectures I strive to clarify complex concepts and to raise interesting questions. In labs, I emphasize speculative hypotheses, experimental design, and development of simple and creative research methods. My "purpose is not to transfer knowledge but to create environments and experiences that bring students to discover and construct knowledge for themselves, to make students members of communities of learners that make discoveries and solve problems." (quote borrowed from Barr, R.B. & Tagg, J. 1995. From teaching to learning -- a new paradigm for undergraduate education. Change. November/December. 13-25) |

| Full functionality of Powerpoint notes requires a recent version of Internet Explorer (unfortunately). Some of the links in the 2002 & 2003 presentations got misaligned in updating to newer versions of Powerpoint. Should you want to print Powerpoint Notes, click the small down-arrow icon at the bottom of the Outline column to expand the text. Then select all text (click and drag). With outline text selected, choose File | Print... from menu bar and then choose Selection in the Page Range Dialog box. This will print all text as an outline without graphics. | |
