  Historical thinking is not easy. It is actually deeply unnatural, from a certain point of view. However it is the ability to think historically, to remove ourselves, conceptually, from our own particular universe of social and political realities and then to enter into other very different universes that gives us any hope of being able to transcend the in-built ills of our age.
